"Statehood for Cuba" - a different pilgrims' tale.

Postby sillydoll on 01 May 2008, 14:26

"Statehood for Cuba" by Arturo Castro explores and encourages Cuba's new American identity as the "51st State" following Fidel Castro's resignation.
"Statehood for Cuba", tells the story of six pilgrims who meet to hike El Camino de Santiago, an ancient spiritual trail through France and Spain. As they travel, myths of the Cuban Revolution and the future possibilities of Cuba as the "51st State" are discussed and explored.
Author Castro, who left Cuba in 1960 at the age of three, has hiked El Camino de Santiago seven times to better understand the role of Spain in the Cuban revolution. This retelling of his experiences and their spiritual, historical, and political repercussions not only bring to light the vast complexity of the Cuban culture and mindset, but add depth and insight that are invaluable to understand a revolution that lasted for almost five decades.
Telling a wide variety of stories, from Jews fleeing Nazi persecution to the betrayal of El Che Guevara to the untold story of Alina Castro, Fidel's daughter, Statehood for Cuba is both authentic and comprehensive in its exploration of the country's mysterious past and uncertain future.
