Okay, I've resisted posting this question for a long as a could. I thought that if I just held off posting it, that the answer would appear from somewhere on the board . . . but it hasn't happened and I'm not a patient person. I've looked through the FAQ's, announcements, feedback without any success.

What do the little icons to the left of the topics mean? Sometimes there is a little circle with grey text. Sometimes it's stationary. Sometimes it's moving. Then there are topics with red text-like icons.

THEN -- VERY OCCASIONALLY -- ONES WITH RED STARS!! That really drove me nuts. And there are one or two other little variations.

What's that all about?

I went to the New Postings to see how my posting would look and it has showed up with a RED STAR!!

I'm sure that Ivar is trying to mess with my head.

What do the little icons to the left of the topics mean? Sometimes there is a little circle with grey text. Sometimes it's stationary. Sometimes it's moving. Then there are topics with red text-like icons.

As far as I know they mean the following:

The icon is black if you have read the topic or red if unread - this applies to individual topics or forums.

If the lines are scrolling it means that there are more than 10 replies to a topic - it is "hot".

If there is a star in the icon you have made a post to that topic.

If there is an arrow in the icon the post has been moved to another forum.

If the icon is in the shape of a fat keyhole / light bulb (can't think of a better description) it is "sticky" and it has be considered significant enough that it remains at the top of the list of posts to a forum.

If the icon contains a padlock the topic has been locked so no more posts can be added. This is hardly ever done as our moderation principles are to allow as much as possible.
