Saturday walk concludes this weekend

Postby Peter Robins on 03 Jul 2008, 09:48

the Camino Ingles local government consortium is currently organising Saturday walks along the route, with various municipal receptions etc. May 31 was Ferrol-Neda, June 7 Neda-Miño, 14 Miño-Presedo, 21 Presedo-A Rua, 28 A Rua-Sigueiro; there was also a group from Corunna/Cambre. They complete the route on Saturday, arriving in Santiago in time for the pilgrim mass. See report in Voz de Galicia, though the departure time from Sigueiro should of course read 7.30 not 19.30 :? - and I would have thought they could have found a more attractive place to take a photo

on completing this walk, the participants point to inadequacies in marking and facilities, and call for more resources to be spent on the route. http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/coruna/200 ... 965278.htm
The Xunta promises resources http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/ferrol/200 ... 968708.htm but AFAICS there's nothing new here.
It seems there were 1,961 overnights in the 3 albergues in 2006, rising to 2,750 in 2007.

This report also mentions a new local government iniciative http://www.rutasporgalicia.com promoting a combination of the Camino Ingles from Ferrol with the Ferrol-Teixido route (the English pdf download is at http://www.rutasporgalicia.com/pdf/ferr ... nglesl.pdf ). This initiative is aimed at cyclists, and uses the main road for the latter route rather than the walkers route, something criticised by the Club Montaña Ferrol, who claim the government and local councils are neglecting the routes, and should be doing more to promote off-tarmac alternatives http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/ferrol/200 ... 968710.htm

I would also point out that the Camino Ingles consortium set up a blog 'for the diffusion of the values of the Camino Ingles' back in April http://caminoingles.blogspot.com/ but since then there have been no entries, not even for this walk they organised. Not much 'diffusion' there!

This is very typical for how things work in Galicia. Everything that is done, is done because there is a project (European money) with X amount of euros for the completion of the project.

There is nothing in the project regarding "How are we going to keep this going after the project ends"... and therefore you have these type of things happen.

Saludos,
Ivar
