The Route: The route used by Christian pilgrims when Moslem domination had extended northwards and was making travel along the Camino francés difficult and dangerous. More at the CSJ website, and in their guide. Also have a look at pictures from the various stages here.

here is some information on the camino norte albergues

I went thru my journal and this is what i have come up with for the albergues on the north route.. Seems smaller than my previous list, but i got the most important ones.
hope this helps.

Irun - Albergue de perigrinos (this is moved to 1/2 block from there previous location. They are looking for another location when i was there.
Albergue juvenil.

Deba - 8 beds only. go to tourist office for the key. If full there is a lady who will pick you up and have accomodation at her house for 15E.

Gernika- Albergue Juvenil opens 4pm

Lezama - albergue de perigrinos open in july

Portugalete - albergue de perigrinos open in july

Pobena - New open may 1 and open at 3pm.

Onton- permanently closed

Castro Urdiales - NEW albergue municipal, report to police station, they will drive and let you in.

Santander - open at 4pm. leave things at the bar just down the road.

Serido -NEW albergue de perigrinos FREE A beautiful place

Unquerra - Permantely closed, Pension is between 10-15E

Alot of places are closed and it is necessary to phone to be let in.

Thanks for posting this (again) Dawn, this is very useful information!

I have a feeling that more and more people will try this camino to avoid the crowds on the French way.

(By the way, I moved this post to the "Camino del Norte" section)
