This is wonderful news, Ivar! I look forward to staying at your place when I finally get to Santiago! :)

Would you consider accepting mail packages from pilgrims & holding them until they arrive? Say, 1 box free per pilgrim, then if they send more stuff, a nominal storage fee for the 2nd box?

I am thinking about offering this, but I need to make sure that I have enough storage space... so I can not promise anything right now.

Congratulations ivar and mrs.
look forward to checking it out. do you have room for a coffee shop, or tables in front. sure would be great to know there is a place to hang with other pilgrims. this year i walked the camino norte, and entered santiago on my own, i met up with 2 hospeteleros from miraz which was fun.

Hospitaleros

Postby sillydoll on 12 Aug 2007, 18:14

Mmm? I think you might need a register for volunteer hospitaleros at Casa Ivar when the Revkes want to go on holiday or to visit family in Norway.
A free bed in return for running the Casa for a week or two!

I wish, but there is no space for it.

Interesting thought... :-)

great news!

As a fellow scandi I look forward to stay at your place (and have a chat with someone who understands sueco) if it's open when I get to Santiago! I'll be starting where i left off, in Coca, Segovia sometime in Sept.
If it isn't open I'll lend you a hand to get it ready! Carpenter's daughter, as well as a workoholic, you know...

No place for breakfast ?

Yes, I will serve breakfast (with coffee and all) but it will not be a café. The license I get is for running a hostal, so I can server breakfast to my guests but I am not sure if I can start selling breakfast (or coffee) to anyone else (need to check what the law says on that one, I might be wrong).

Will most likely have warm coffee handy all day anyway, if someone feel like stopping by for a cup.

If it isn't open I'll lend you a hand to get it ready!

Is that a promise? :-)

Greetings from sunny and warm Santiago,
Ivar

Ivar to Open Hostel

Postby steve on 12 Aug 2007, 21:51

Congratulations to Ivar and his wife. Good luck with the paperwork (tramites) involved in the process. I will try to find some little nicknack from Ballard (Scandinavian area of Seattle) for the place, please send an address. And we hope to visit there after finishing the Camino next year. Steve

congratulations Ivar. I think Sil and Peter have inadvertently named your place for you..."Casa Ivar"............what do you think about that? i know you are a humble man, but it's an easy name for all of us to remember. :D What does everyone else think?

Big News

Postby Kevin F. O*brien on 13 Aug 2007, 04:37

Someone mentioned Casa Ivar was on the way in from the "La Plata". I have looked at the map but can't quite place it in relation to the Cathedral although it looks like it is on the way up the hill from the Convent. On the last few hundred metre of that Camino

http://ets.freetranslation.com/

this site translates "Casa Ivar" into "marries Ivar" :D

Perhaps Ivar could run a "registro de casamiento"
in his spare time, of course.
Oh no !!!! now I have to look up "I do" in espanol 8)

Ja, født og oppvokst.. :-)
Casa Ivar?

Hmmm.... not sure. I would like to blend more in with Santiago de Compostela. I think I would like to go with a Galician name... I have an idea for a name, but for now I will not tell :D

... today (Monday) I will start running around to the different offices I need to visit to get the paperwork ready. I hope everything goes well.

By the way, rain in the forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday in Santiago,
Ivar

I think you should go with "Casa Ivar" - it's easy to remember (remember most of you guests might not be members of the forum) and even a Google search without Santiago added returns only 39 entries (no need to scroll down)

Just an update:

The license I will get will be as Pension ** and not Hostal. Found this out after looking through the paperwork that was handed in to the Xunta for all the licenses that I need. It seems like the last inspection is scheduled for the first week of September. After that I would have to start decorating and getting furniture in.

what is actually the difference between a Hostal and a Pension? The different categories in Spain (+ huespedes, fondas . . .) have always baffled me, though I've often found that tourist office lists only list hotels and hostales, not the other categories.

I think one difference is the access for disabled people (elevator, and so on...). New construction (my place is new) need to comply with this if they would like to be categorized as Hostal or Hotel.

That is why (I think) my place will be pension and not hostal.

Note that there are many hostals and hotels without elevator, but they got them approved before this new regulation came into effect.

...at least this is how I think it is, I am learning this as I go along. :-)

Saludos,
Ivar

This is fantastic Ivar,

For both my camino, I ended up staying at a hospidajae (I guess that's means a cheap hostal with a shared bathroom).

Now I can stay at a place that is run for pilgrims by a pilgrims.

Looking forward to staying (or at least meet up with you) the next time I'm in Santiago.

Congratulations Ivar. It may be some time before I make it back to Santiago but I will be sure to stay when I do.

The storeage of stuff mentioned by Silvia and others is a great idea even if not on site and if you take in cyclists you will need some space for their bikes!
